Rangers’ season has turned sour pretty quickly, hasn’t it? Things were looking positive just a few weeks ago but that seems a world away now. Now, the only way they can flip the negativity on its head is an Old Firm derby win.
An international break gives Steven Gerrard and his men chance to reflect on what’s been a dismal couple of weeks at Ibrox. The break is either a blessing or a curse, but it couldn’t come quick enough after their uninspiring 1-1 draw at home to Kilmarnock on Saturday. The Gers look wounded.
They travel to Celtic Park on March 31 and the game will either duplicate Gerrard’s misery or get the fans off his back for a while. He’s been criticised for late, reactionary substitutions and a lack of fight in his squad, but he and the players can put that right against their biggest rivals.
Their 1-0 win last time the clubs met gave Rangers a huge boost. Their first since returning to the top flight in 2016, it boosted expectation, the likes of which the squad are now struggling to live up to. It’s clear Rangers need something to be positive about now their Scottish Cup dream is over.
Games against Hearts and Motherwell follow the Old Firm derby, and they won’t be easy either, so a win would set them on track to finish the season strongly, not just make the fans forget the previous few weeks.
The pressure is on at Ibrox, and there’s no better way to turn it around than against the Hoops on their home turf.
