Liverpool are set for a major shake-up behind the scenes and have confirmed the change in structure to their backroom, as reported on their official website.
What’s the word?
Liverpool fans hoping for some positive news after another shock defeat in 2017 may have got exactly what they wanted, as the club is preparing for a major shake-up behind the scenes that will significantly alter the way the club operates.
Chief executive Ian Ayre will leave Anfield after a decade of service to join German side 1860 Munich, with current EA Sports CEO Peter Moore coming in to replace him- but the roles will be different.
Ayre’s successor will have a much more controlled role at the club, with commercial chief Billy Hogan already being promoted to managing director and Michael Edwards has taken a role of sporting director. Crucially, this means all football-related activity will be controlled by Jurgen Klopp and his team.
Why the change?
To put it bluntly, Liverpool’s current set-up isn’t working as the Reds have won just one League Cup since Ian Ayre took his position a decade ago and he’s become unpopular with a number of supporters- following some poor transfer decisions.
2012 was the main year of Liverpool fan’s frustrations towards Ayre as the club set-up a transfer committee that failed to secure notable transfers, mainly during Brendan Rodgers’ tenure at the club, which was widely criticised.
Now, Jurgen Klopp and his team will have full control over the transfers but that, like everything, comes with some risk- as it means the entire structure will have to change again should the German leave his role, whereas the Reds had stability in that area with Ayre at the helm.
