Aston Villa journalist Gregg Evans has laid down his expectations for the club for the rest of the January transfer window.
What’s the word?
Aston Villa’s January has been a busy one with three players arriving through the door.
Danny Drinkwater and Pepe Reina have both signed on loan while Mbwana Samatta became a permanent acquisition from Genk.
The striker is available to face Leicester in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night where supporters could catch their first glimpse of the Tanzania international.
Dean Smith has made it clear that Villa are looking to add another striker to their ranks before the window slams shut on Friday evening, but should we expect anything else from the Midlands outfit?
Thankfully, The Athletic’s Evans has provided us with an answer.
In response to a Villa fan on Twitter, he stated the following:
The right policy
Truth be told, the last thing Aston Villa need in the remaining days of the window is a midfielder.
John McGinn may be out injured but they still have a plethora of options to choose from, especially after Drinkwater arrived for a temporary stint from Chelsea.
As well as the effervescent Jack Grealish, they possess Conor Hourihane and Douglas Luiz who recently scored against Watford. On top of that, they have Marvelous Nakamba who is a regular starter at the base of the midfield.
Did he really play for us?! No Villa fan has managed to name all of these obscure Villans….
Villa’s need for a striker, however, couldn’t be clearer. Five-goal Wesley has struggled in his debut term in English football and is now out for the rest of the season while Jonathan Kodjia has departed the club altogether.
Furthermore, Samatta is very much an unproven entity in English football and Keinan Davis has only just returned from injury himself.
The Villans have been in the market for Daniel Sturridge this month (Fanatik, via Sport Witness) but it remains to be seen whether he is the striker Evans is eluding to when he says he expects a forward to arrive.
Meanwhile, check out who FFC expects to start for Villa against Leicester tonight…
